Multiple income streams never hurt anyone. As a matter of fact, we should have more than one income source.  Are you a professional writer or is writing just a hobby? You can convert your writing skills to cash by writing for people and organizations that need your services. It could be script writing, proposals, speeches, etc. This would no doubt become another income stream for you. You however have to be careful not to chew more than you can swallow so that your different jobs do not suffer.

So, how do you start up as a freelance writer? Here are some useful tips that could start you down that path.

Be sure you really know how to write: Writing might seem like one of the easiest professions to hop on but this is not true. Many people think writing is just about putting out their opinions. It however goes beyond this as you have to ensure that your grammatical structure, tenses, spellings, logical flow and many more technical elements are correct. If you are not sure about how good your writing is, have a professional read it and honestly give you an opinion. Whatever the case, there is room for improvement.

Streamline: There are several types of writing. It could be business, script, fashion, documentary, social network and several more. You have to decide which you are strongest at and develop those skills. A good writer might be able to attempt all of these, if put through properly. You however have your interests and should stick to them. Hence, choose the types of writing you’re most comfortable with and improve on them.

Grow your network: We live in the age of new media where the next person to credit your account for a job might just be a click away. Having a large network never hurt anyone. Take advantage of your social media platforms like Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter to make valuable contacts relevant to the services you offer. Be very polite and professional when sending potential clients emails about what you do. Also advertise yourself through your profiles and updates.

Be proactive: Leaving your comfort zone might just be what you need. Take advantage of the internet to search potential organizations or individuals you might able to offer your services. For instance, it could be the contact of a magazine. You never know when they are scouting freelance writers. In my experience as a writer for Genevieve magazine, I can tell you sometimes we needed writers urgently but just couldn't find them. So take the initiative!

Tell a friend: After you have made the decision to write freelance, talk to friends and acquaintances about it. You never know who they are connected to or have dealings with. Don’t stop telling people. You can also advertise your service on their blogs. You should also make friends with other freelance writers. They might be able to tell you a thing or two that could help.

Register on reputable job sites, and social network groups: There are several reputable job sites and groups that advertise jobs which often include writing jobs. Ensure you get daily email updates of their activities so that you’re right on time to open the door when that comes knocking. Avoid certain sites that make offers that seem too good to be true. There are many time-wasting sites like such.  Here’s a little secret you shouldn't tell anyone. Join “Lagos Business Club” on Linkedin and get active! Feel free to advertise your services there as well. It is a very useful group. Also go to the “job” section of Linkedin and subscribe for daily alerts. You should also follow @channelnneka on Twitter as I would be posting openings I come across.

All the best in your endevours!

  1. The majority of these content tools are mostly just a lot of unnecessary functionality. I have always looked to Yoast for its technical functionality but when it comes down to it the paid version includes a number of things I really do not have a need for. It seems like they just add extra stuff to get you to pay more. My preference is the INK for ALL application https://seo.app/XzTXZsUH9
