Tale 4: The Travelling Mindset
It was a year since her 'break-up' with Gbenga and the loss of her
friendship with Eka. Tara was back to being alone. Being the lone ranger she
was once called till Eka forced her into being friends. She relinquished the
solitude; she accepted the cruel unfairness of fate.
Tara was now more lost in her thoughts than in the reality that stood
before her. She ignored
the gestures made at her by Eka's new click of bimbos.
She always gazed out of class thinking what had she done wrong that day. It had
been a year. She should let go. If only her heart accepted the message passed
across by her mind.
Eka had uncharacteristically told everyone most things Tara told her in
secret. Her life, her past, her family, her rape. Eka was her solace; the one
person she felt she could tell anything. Her vault of secrets. Sadly, those
locks swung open easily. Tara would never trust anyone with her secrets again.
Not as long as she recalled the name Eka.
"You think too much"
At first Tara thought it was an imagination, she could swear no one
spoke to her. Worse off it was the voice of a guy. There had to be a mistake,
he wasn't speaking to her, whoever he was.
"You know it is polite to acknowledge a person speaking to
you."
Finally Tara looked to see who exactly spoke to her. It was Harry, the
guy who every girl in class talked about behind his back, the guy who every
girl would want to know. Here he was talking to her, the one girl who could
care less if he looked like a cheap clone of Denzel Washington or if he had the
build of an athlete.
"What?" Tara tried to sound genuinely confused without being
rude.
"I asked why you think too much."
"Because I am a student and that is what we do. We think about
school, family, friends, money."
"Half of the things you mentioned are meant for your parents to
worry about. Not you"
"You should be paying attention in class."
Tara took a dramatic pause to allow him believe she doesn't know his name.
He smiled politely and for that minute, a part of her which she wasn't used to
felt weak and uncertain. This was new to her, but she shook off the thought in
her mind and stared on almost with no emotion like she expected an answer.
"Harry. My name is Harry, and yours is Wandoo."
"Only family calls me Wandoo. And you dear Harry are not
family"
He laughed. Harry was not discouraged by her attempts to push him away;
he was confident in himself, this was something she wasn't used to with guys
her age.
The lecturer shot a cold evil look towards Tara and Harry and just then
she realized he had laughed loud enough for the whole class to hear. Everyone
looked at them and immediately there was an ocean of whispers. Tara caught Eka
looking at her for a few seconds before making a face popularly known as 'yimu'
and turned her attention back to the lecturer.
Tara knew Eka was itching to know why Harry was talking to her but
because of her new click, she would not be able to ask her. Tara almost once
again forgot that Harry was still talking to her. He had to touch her on her
shoulder for her to notice the paper he had written something on: How about we
ditch this lecture?
She looked at him like he was crazy, but his face was more convincing
than a politician running for re-election. She wrote the biggest NO she could
possibly write on the paper. He smirked and put his hands over her shoulder.
She shrugged to get the hand off, and it didn't work. She then used her own
hands to try and take his hands over to his side.
The lecturer caught a hold of the drama and he was having no more of it.
"You two, leave the class at once! Go practice your love
elsewhere"
"I am sorry sir; it is my entire fault" Harry said boldly,
trying to defend Tara "She is trying to concentrate and I am trying to get
her phone number"
The whole class erupted in laughter. Tara kept her eyes on Eka who tried
not to look back and laugh. She was also captivated by Harry's bravery. He
slowly walked out of the class room, much to the hailing of the entire
classroom.
After the lecturer left the class, she walked out to many people talking
about her and Harry. For once she was no longer the former Eka's friend with a
troubled childhood. She was the girl the most desirable guy wanted. She was the
one Harry sorts after.
"Do you feel I have earned calling you Wandoo now?"
Harry spoke from behind her. He had been waiting for her to be done with
her lectures. She found it flattering
"It cannot be that easy."
"I guess I would have to work harder"
Once again she felt something she had never felt before in her heart.
This was going to be trouble, she knew it, she liked it.
